Detail (below) showing the C gouge marks which are on the post foot rail (original) and the side rail (later) and the colour change by the 'III' marks showing the sapwood. Note foot rails original bruising around the post mortice. 
The tops of the posts had not been cut down at any time, as indicated by the chuck marks still seen in the end grain.
Other marks on the post include a small repair to the top of the proper left post between the flutes and the carvers mistakes in marking out the reeding on the vase (below).
Holes drilled in behind the carving (below) on the 45 degree joint would have had a bar which helped hold and pull the side canopy lengths together.
Other markings on the bed include cramp marks, plane marks.
