Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA)
Furniture Seminar: “British by Design: Furniture in the Age of Thomas Chippendale”
March 15-16, 2019

Winston-Salem, NC

The MESDA Furniture Seminar provides a biennial forum for collectors, curators, woodworkers, and conservators to explore a variety of topics related to the serious study of antique furniture. The 2019 program will explore the cabinetmaking connections between the British Isles and America, from New England to the Southern colonies.

The designs of eighteenth-century British furniture maker Thomas Chippendale have had a profound global impact on furniture construction, use, and style. His 1754 Gentleman and Cabinet-Makers Director has cemented his place as one of the most influential figures in furniture history. In America, cabinetmakers throughout New England, the Mid-Atlantic, and the South borrowed liberally from Chippendale's Director, and have left us with American masterpieces with a distinctively British flair.

MESDA has been a strong supporter of SAPFM by periodic hosting of our Midyear meetings and by giving our members unprecedented access to the objects in their museum and library resources. This seminar should be of strong interest to our members in pursuit of our mission of education in the appreciation of American period furniture.

Please consider attending this important seminar. More information and registration can be found at:
