methods of work installing a half mortise lock
« on: February 21, 2018, 11:28:26 AM »
I am building a Chippendale chest with locks on the drawers using Horton Brasses locksLK-4 Half Mortise Drawer Lock

These drawer locks are English; made by the Squire family. I am interested in comments on methods how to best cut the mortise, install and line up the strike plates.

I start by figuring where the pin has to go, centered on the drawer and however far down it needs to be.  Drill that hole.  I then mark out where the wood needs to be removed for the box portion of the lock to sit in.
This then allows you to place the lock on the inside and knife out where the wood needs to be removed to inset the lock.  I will use two routers with two set ups in depth to do a group of drawers. goes faster that way.

For the strike plates...after the lock is installed on the drawer- I have used carbon paper to mark where the lock hits the rail above.
