Gateway Chapter Spring Meeting
« on: January 02, 2010, 12:39:11 PM »
Well, with the new year, another holiday season has come and gone.  I hope the season brought you and yours many blessings.  Time to take down the tree, say goodbye to the in-laws and rewrap the fruitcake for regifting next year.

While you were celebrating and I was resting on my laurels and basking the satisfaction of a successful Gateway Chapter Fall meeting (hey, you gotta be proud of something so I take what I can get), chapter member Cal Hobbs was hard at work making plans for the Gateway Regional Chapter Spring meeting in Kansas City.  If the itinerary is any indication, the second meeting will be better than the first.

The group will meet in the morning at the Kansas City Plaza Library at 10 am for the usual meet and greet, show and tell, etc. followed by a presentation on periods, commas, question marks and the oft misunderstood semicolon...oh wait, that's the SAPEM (Society of American Period English Majors) meeting next door--it is at a library after all.  Cal will be talking about the William & Mary, Queen Anne, Chippendale and Federal periods.  Cal really knows his stuff and has an impressive library of his own to draw from so come equipped with questions and comments.

He's also working on having somekind of hands-on technique demonstration.  More on that to come.  After lunch the meeting will move to the Nelson/Atkins Gallery of Art for a guided tour of the American Collection and Conservation Department.  Cal is pretty familiar with museum's period furniture collection and promises it won't disappoint.

Although Cal is capable and confident (a little alliteration for you other SAPEM members), I'm sure he'd appreciate your input and assistance so don't hesitate to drop him a line ([email protected]) or make a post here on the forum.

For those of you from St. Louis and points east and are interested in discussing carpooling, feel free to post in this forum or contact me directly ([email protected]) and I'll do my best to help connect you to other members.

The main details have been worked out.  Looking forward to a great meeting!  Thanks, Calvin

Society of American Period Furniture Makers
Gateway Chapter - Spring Meeting 2010

Date:  March 27th, 2010               Time:  10:00 am till 5:00 pm

Location:     Kansas City Public Library, Plaza Branch
4801 Main Street, Kansas City, MO 64112
      Phone 816-701-3481
      http://www.kclibrary.org/plaza

In a great location, the Plaza Public Library has a large meeting room that will work perfectly for the meeting.  And it is within a few blocks of the Nelson-Atkins Gallery of Art.

Schedule:
10:00-10:30 am   Meet and Greet. Social time. Have a cup of coffee and introduce yourselves to old friends and make new ones.  After all, there are not too many of us that think period furniture is cool!

10:30-11:30 am   Show and Tell.  Show off your latest project.  Bring it if you can, or share pictures, either paper or electronic.  Take a few minutes to talk about what you are working on in the shop, ask questions.

11:30-12:30 pm   Presentation – An introduction to Furniture Periods.  Calvin Hobbs will share an outline of what makes a piece Chippendale or Queen Anne, Federal or William and Mary.

12:30-1:00 pm      Lunch

1:00-1:30 pm   Review of Period Furniture Resources – Open discussion on books, websites, etc. that you have found rewarding.

1:30-2:45 pm   Presentation – Line and Berry Inlay.  Ron Lomax will give a demonstration on the techniques he used for the line and berry inlay on his excellent Pennsylvania Spice Chest.

2:45 pm      Drive to the Nelson Atkins Gallery of Art

3:00 – 4:30 pm   Tour of the American Collection at the Nelson. This is a great opportunity to tour the American Collection with Head Conservator Joe Rogers and Curator of Decorative Arts, Catherine Futter.  The collection at the Nelson has many beautiful pieces that represent all periods and regions of America’s 18th century.

4:30-5:00 pm      Discussion of Next Meeting and Wrap Up

Greetings from Kansas City!

I am working on a list for everyone that might be coming in from out of town.  Everyone might also want to check out the Lie-Nielson hand tool event that is going on Friday the 26th through Saturday at the KC Woodworker’s Guild.  Make it a weekend and check out LN on Friday and Sapfm on Saturday!

Here are a few hotels.  The area is nice, so I would expect all of them to be nice.  It seems that the Holiday Inn has the lowest rate.  I talked to a few about a group rate but I had to guarantee the amount of rooms, so I don't expect that to be done.

Marriott -Plaza               816-531-3000

Embassy Suites            816-756-1720

Best Western Seville      816-561-9600

Holiday Inn                    816-216-8006

Hampton Inn                  816-448-4600

Courtyard Marriott          800-511-7957

Here is a link to the locations.  All are within a couple of minutes from the library and the Art Museum.

So come on people, send Gerald or me a note and let me know if you are coming (or not, also).  My email is [email protected]   Looking forward to seeing any and all of you here.  I will also try to organize a place for people to meet on Friday night if anyone is interested.

Thanks, Cal Hobbs

All,

We are a couple of days from the Gateway Chapter Spring Meeting in Kansas City!  I'm really excited for a good meeting.  We have about 20 or more confirmed, including Joe Rogers and Catherine Futter from the Nelson-Atkins Art Museum.  Should be great!

Couple of points before Saturday:

1- We have a nice set up at the Library, SO BRING SHOW AND TELL!!!!  I will try to score a couple of carts so we can help bring your pieces in the front door at the library.

2- There is free parking at the library.  Coffee is available at the library coffee shop.  Bill Pogson has organized lunch from a local restaurant called The Mixx.  There will be 3 choices for $15 each, delivered to the library.  Bring cash if you can.

3- It is a short drive to the Nelson, and we can leave our stuff at the library if that works.

If you need anything else, please call me at 816-985-7432.  See you Saturday!  Cal

Hi all,

Jan and I would like to thank you for inviting us to the gateway chapter meeting.  We met up with some old friends and met some incredibly talented new friends.  Calvin did a fine job of laying out the meeting and his presentation.  Ron's demonstration of line and berry brought back old memories and started me digging to find my tools.   Katherine and Joe gave us a fine tour of the furniture at the Nelson Atkins Museum.  The problem we had was the day was not long enough (seems like there is never enough time, when you are in a room with talented people).  We would love to hear from the group members when Calvin passes along the email lists.  Thank you again for allowing us to be a part of your meeting.  Jan & Randy

All,

Thanks again to all of you for making a great meeting.  And there was awesome show and tell.  There are many, many talented craftsmen out here in the middle of the country.  Special thanks go out to Catherine and Joe of the Nelson-Atkins Museum.  Made the day very special.  And also Bill and Pam Pogson for organizing the food, books, etc. and Mark Carr for photos.  I really appreciate all of your help.

Couple of things:

1.       We have decided that the next meeting will be in St. Louis in the fall.

2.       Looks like the date would be around September 18th, or within a couple of weekends either way.

3.       Wayne Watson will spearhead the fall meeting, along with Gerald Yungling.  I of course will be glad to help any way that I can.

4.       We can look into the location of Kent Atkins shop for the meeting.  Wayne should contact Kent and firm up the date.

5.       We need volunteers for presentations/demonstrations for the meeting.  Ideally we would look from within our group for these.

6.       Those of you that are not SAPFM members, please consider joining.  You can look for more information at www.sapfm.org .

I will attempt to post some pics in subsequent posts in this thread.

I am excited going forward on having a continuous strong Gateway Chapter of the SAPFM, and participation like we had last Saturday will keep us going.  Thanks again.  Cal

Wow, great pics!  I'm really sorry I wasn't able to attend.  Once again, congrats to Cal and everyone for a successful meeting.
