I am building a demilune table top very similar to that made by Ed Stuckey in the Gallery of this website. It involves making a pre-assembled veneer assembly with bookmatched crotch mahogany. The crotch mahogany veneer is very decorative but has voids in numerous areas. The voids would not cause me to reject this veneer but I am concerned with how best to manage them. They are about 1.25" long and are anywhere from 1/64th to 1/16th" wide. I am going to use a vacuum press with Unibond 800 and Unibond Blocker. Do I just let the dark Unibond fill in these naturally occuring voids or do I fill in these areas with similar colored veneer before I take it to the press? In other words, at what dimension must these voids be to decide that mere glue filling is not enough? Thanks, Jim MacNaughton

Hello Jim, my advice, allways start your pressing with your venneer and baseboard  in good shape? (all voids or defects repaired) for this one reason, your useing a vacuum press, this will definitly pull down all defective aria's, and this will show on the finnished surface, as with a screw press, the venner will glue flat and the glue will fill any void, leaving the finnished surface flat. if the repair its very small, a matched filler would sufice, but allways repair always before you press.
