Popular Woodworking Magazine will have this years Woodworking in America conference 2010, October 1 - 3, at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center (right across the river from Cincinnati)  We have been invited to promote SAPFM to the public attending this event. Although this is in Ohio, this is not just an event for the ORV (Ohio River Valley Chapter). Last year we participated and spoke with woodworkers from Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, and as far away as St Louis, and Atlanta. This is a great opportunity to showcase SAPFM as the attendees tend to be serious woodworkers looking to take up a challenge and really improve their skills. This is also a good opportunity to boost participation in the local chapters that serve throughout the Midwest. If you have a skill you can demo, a furniture project we can put on display(they would like to see some case pieces),  join me for this upcoming show. PWW will provide a solid workbench for demos. This will be the 4th Woodworking in America conference I have attended. At the first one in Berea, Kentucky Adam Cherubini asked me why SAPFM didn't have a booth. I worked with Glen Huey and rectified the situation. I organized a Hand Tool Olympics so that people could use some hand tools, have some fun, and get some information on SAPFM. We have 6 people coming from the Minnesota chapter to work the Hand Tool Olympics and need some more volunteers to work the booth, doing demonstrations and overseeing a gallery. For the Gallery we need people to to get furniture pieces to the event. Since there are no other exhibits of furniture at the event I am sure this will be popular.
Why is this important and worthwhile? It is a great outreach for SAPFM. I am not sure of the numbers but I believe Mark Arnold signed up between 30 and 50 new members last year and this year there will be more attendees. As a volunteer organization we need volunteers to make things happen so don't be afraid to step up. This is a great opportunity to see and interact with people like Roy Underhill, Frank Klausz and Michael Fortune. Popular Woodworking has given us four 10 x 10 booths worth $2400 to set up in. Let's make good use of the opportunity. Oh, I almost forgot, it is great fun!
