The E-Interview Series: The Bombé Chest with John Davis

Chest Sides

Figure 1. Chest sides after the waste has been removed using a dado blade.

SAPFM What are the dimensions of the rough stock you started with?
DAVIS The rough stock was 12/4 for the sides and drawer fronts.

SAPFM Did you create a template and trace it on the sides before dadoing?
DAVIS Yes. I used 1/4” MDF for templates.

SAPFM How over thickness did you cut the sides?
DAVIS I only left 1/16” excess and got away with it because my wood was stable. It would be safer to leave a little more to see how the wood stabilizes before hand planing to the final thickness.

SAPFM How are the bridges removed?
DAVIS I whacked off the bridges with a bench chisel but I left the end bridges on as long as possible while finish planing the faces.

SAPFM What type of dado blade do you use?
DAVIS I use a set of Forrest Blades and cut a stairstep pattern on the inside and outside faces of the case sides. I didn’t tilt the arbor/blades.
